Captain Pipinos
Captain Pipinos is a family fish taverna at the water’s edge in Agios Georgios, the bay at the southern end of Antiparos that faces the islet of Despotiko. It has its own dock for tenders, which makes it an easy lunch stop for yachts.
From the days of boats only
Captain Pipinos is one of the oldest tavernas in Agios Georgios, from the time when the bay could only be reached by sea and families arrived by caique. The road came later. The same family still runs it, their own boats still bring in the day’s catch, and octopus hangs to dry on the railings above the water.
What to order
Fish is the reason to come. The day’s catch is shown whole, so you choose your own and pay by weight; visit by midday and the taverna will keep a fish for your dinner that evening. Around it, order sun-dried mackerel, charcoal-grilled octopus, shrimp saganaki with tomato and feta and the house seafood salad, with a Greek salad and a glass of ouzo.
Getting there from the yacht
Agios Georgios is a sheltered, calm anchorage and one of the best known between Paros and Antiparos. Drop anchor in the bay and bring the tender to the taverna’s private dock, a few steps from the tables. By road it is about 11 km south of Antiparos town along the coast. Boats leave daily from the little harbour here for Despotiko and its ancient sanctuary of Apollo, which makes an easy outing before lunch.
Good to know
The taverna opens daily in season from noon to 11pm, and the kitchen serves all day. Call ahead to book a table, especially for a sunset dinner facing Despotiko. The beach beside the taverna is calm, so you can swim before lunch.
