Musket Cove Yacht Club Island Bar
The Island Bar belongs to the Musket Cove Yacht Club and stands on a small island at the edge of the marina on Malolo Lailai, joined to the resort by a floating walkway. The resort describes it as a gathering place for families, resort guests and visiting yachts from across the Pacific.
A cruising sailors’ meeting place
Musket Cove Island Resort opened in 1976. It was built by the developer Dick Smith, and the resort’s main restaurant, Dick’s Place, carries his name. Any sailor who reaches Musket Cove from a foreign port can join the yacht club, which counts more than 16,000 lifetime members. The club also hosts the annual Fiji Regatta Week, and the Island Bar is its social hub.
What to order
Settle into a lounger with a frozen mojito for the sunset, or try a house cocktail such as the Musket Mai Tai or the Bula Malai, both made with Fijian rums. From noon to 9pm the kitchen serves burgers, fish and chips made with battered walu, and 13-inch pizzas.
For a casual dinner, order a barbecue pack at the resort’s Trader Cafe by midday. You choose three meats or fish, such as lime and coriander fish fillet or prawn and pineapple skewers, three sides and two desserts, and the pack is delivered to the bar at 6pm for you to cook on the grills.
Getting there from the yacht
Yachts can anchor in the bay or pick up a mooring outside the marina, and a few berths on the club pontoon in the dredged basin can be booked in advance. There is a dinghy dock, and visiting crews can use the laundry, showers, general store and fuel. From Port Denarau, the Malolo Cat ferry takes about 50 minutes.
Good to know
The bar opens at 11am and stays open until late. Barbecue packs are portioned for the size of your group, and non-resort guests pay a set rate per person. Visiting yachts can also use the resort’s other restaurants and bars.
