Beach Club· Malamala Island, Mamanuca Islands

Malamala Beach Club

Malamala Beach Club takes up the whole of Malamala, a 5.5-acre island in the Mamanuca group, about half an hour by boat from Port Denarau. It opened in August 2017 and calls itself the world’s first beach club on its own island.

A beach club on its own island

The club belongs to South Sea Cruises, the Port Denarau ferry and cruise operator. The island is small enough to walk round in about 20 minutes. The main club has an infinity-edge pool, a restaurant and a bar, with beachside cabanas and massage bures on the far side and The Venue, an adults-only area with its own bar and plunge pool. Snorkelling gear, kayaks and paddleboards are free to use on the reef around the island.

What to order

The kitchen cooks a Pacific-inspired à la carte menu, from light bites such as sliders and loaded fries to a full sit-down lunch, served in the open-air restaurant or by the pool. The house cocktails are the Drunken Coconut and the Malamala Rosi, and the bar also has beer and an international wine list.

Getting there from the yacht

Private boats are welcome. The club has free moorings for boats up to 5 tonnes, first come, first served, which cannot be reserved. Larger yachts, or any boat that arrives to find every mooring taken, are directed by the island team to a safe anchorage clear of the reef. Private boats may not beach or tie up at the jetty, so the club’s free tender brings guests ashore, pausing while the ferries berth. Overnight mooring is not allowed.

Good to know

The island is open every day from 8am to 6pm. A landing fee is charged per person at The Hub on arrival, and a minimum spend applies. Call on the day to check moorings and agree an arrival time. Cabanas and daybeds must be booked and paid in advance, and the busiest times are late December to mid-January and the Australian and New Zealand school holidays.
