Bar Abaco

Bar Abaco opened on 22 December 1981 in Ca’n Marcel, an old Mallorcan house on Carrer de Sant Joan in La Llotja, the quarter behind Palma’s fish quay. It is a cocktail bar in rooms filled with antiques, candles and fresh flowers, and a natural last stop after dinner in the old town.

A house dressed for a party

The bar takes its name from the large abacuses, the slabs that crown the columns of the entrance hall, where carriages and horses once came in. The bar counter stands in this hall, with armchairs covered in traditional Mallorcan fabric, old paintings, a large fireplace and sculptures, all lit by candles and decorated with fruit and bunches of flowers.

Upstairs, two salons with large paintings and deep armchairs are open to guests, and the restored kitchen, full of copper pans and folk ceramics, can be visited too. Salvador Palao Baños, who created and decorated the bar, collected the pieces from antique dealers across Spain. Classical music plays throughout. The bar’s own history recalls a 1984 Financial Times article that called it perhaps the most remarkable bar in the world.

What to drink

Come for a cocktail or a glass of champagne rather than a meal. The list covers signature and classic cocktails, champagne, cava, wine and premium spirits, with coffee and desserts too. Drinks cost more than in an ordinary Palma bar, and many visitors treat that as the price of the setting.

Getting there from the yacht

Carrer de Sant Joan runs up from Plaça de la Llotja, close to the fishermen’s quay. From the Real Club Náutico it is about a ten-minute walk; from Club de Mar or the marinas further west, take a taxi along the Paseo Marítimo. It pairs well with dinner on the fish quay or in La Llotja.

Good to know

Abaco opens in the evening and stays open late. The bar does not take reservations, so arrive early for a seat in the courtyard; a place at the bar comes quicker than a table. Staff are strict about photographs inside. Hours change through the year, so check before you go.
