Papagiorgis

Papagiorgis is a pastry shop and ice cream parlour in Corfu’s Old Town that has traded since 1924. Stop here for an ice cream in the lanes, or for a box of Corfiot sweets to take back on board.

An Old Town institution

The shop has been open without a break since 1924 and has passed from one generation to the next; the third generation of the Dafnis family runs it today. It still follows the old recipes for traditional Corfiot sweets, and over the years it has added homemade ice cream to the counter.

The food guide TasteAtlas has named Papagiorgis among the 100 most iconic ice cream parlours in the world three years in a row, as the Greek news site iefimerida reported.

What to order

The ice cream is made with Corfiot milk. The dark chocolate flavour is the one TasteAtlas picked out, while wild strawberry and, in season, kumquat are the local specialities. To take away, look for the kumquat sweets and preserves, mantolato and mantoles, all traditional Corfiot products. The shop is also known for its pastries, such as the mille-feuille with wild strawberry jam, and whole cakes such as almond cake and lemon tart can be ordered for a celebration on board.

Getting there from the yacht

Papagiorgis is at 32 Nikiforou Theotoki, in the middle of the Old Town. Once you are in town it is an easy walk through the lanes. If your yacht is in a marina outside the centre, take a taxi into the Old Town and make the shop your last stop before heading back to the boat.

Good to know

The shop opens every day from 9am to midnight, according to its website. There is no need to book. It also sells its sweets, preserves and cakes through an online shop.
