Pete’s Pub & Gallery

Pete’s Pub is a beach bar and restaurant on the shore of Little Harbour, near the southern end of the Sea of Abaco, a few steps from the Johnston family’s bronze foundry and gallery. Sailors and day-trippers have made it one of the classic stops in the Abacos.

A family of sculptors

The artist Randolph Johnston and his wife Margot settled in this remote cove in 1951, and Little Harbour is still home to the Johnston Art Gallery & Foundry. It is the only working bronze foundry in the Bahamas, and three generations of the family have worked there alongside visiting artists. Peter Johnston, a sculptor of marine wildlife, founded and owns the pub and gallery, and the gallery says its bronzes are held in collections as far afield as the Vatican.

What to order

Fresh local fish is the reason to come. Daily specials have included mango grilled grouper, ginger garlic tuna, lemon pepper dolphin (mahi-mahi), grilled lobster salad and coconut cracked conch, served with peas and rice and pineapple walnut coleslaw. There is an Angus beef burger for anyone not eating fish, and sushi with live music on Friday nights.

Getting there from the yacht

Little Harbour is a well-sheltered anchorage, but the entrance has only about 4 feet (1.2 m) at low tide, so check your draft and the tide before going in. Deeper yachts can wait outside and send guests in by tender to the pub’s dock. The pub has overnight slips for smaller boats and will give current advice on the entrance if you contact the team ahead. By road, the settlement is at the end of an unpaved track south of Marsh Harbour.

Good to know

The pub’s menu page gives lunch from noon to 4pm and dinner from 6pm to 9pm, with specials every day. Times can change out of season, so call ahead, especially for dinner. Leave time to look round the gallery and the foundry before or after the meal.
