Yacht Charter Abacos Bahamas

Hope Town’s candy-striped lighthouse, the sheltered Sea of Abaco and quiet cays from Elbow Cay to Green Turtle Cay: a crewed yacht charter in the Abacos is the Bahamas at its most relaxed.

Yacht guide

Choosing a yacht for the Abacos

None of them is based in the Abacos itself: they cruise from elsewhere in the Bahamas and from South Florida, and come north for your charter. Three things decide which one suits your trip: how much water she needs in the shallow Sea of Abaco, the kind of days your group enjoys, and how she reaches Marsh Harbour. For the islands, the season and costs, see our guide to an Abacos yacht charter.

Draft and the Sea of Abaco

The Sea of Abaco is sheltered but shallow in places, and some harbours, Hope Town among them, have narrow, shallow entrances. A yacht that draws less water anchors closer to the beaches and reaches more bays; a deeper one anchors further out and uses her tender. Among the yachts listed, PEDDLER draws 1.3 m and Azimut 118 Grande 2.1 m.

Catamaran or motor yacht

Catamarans such as Wave 60 and COLETTE 64 sit level at anchor and give every cabin room to spread out, which suits families and slow days between Hope Town, Man-O-War and Great Guana Cay. Motor yachts such as PEDDLER, OUPA’S IMPULSE, Azimut 118 Grande and DONA LOLA cruise at 17.5 to 20 knots, which shortens the passage to the Abacos and leaves more of the week for the cays.

Reaching the Abacos

A yacht coming from Nassau crosses the Northeast Providence Channel, and one from South Florida crosses the Gulf Stream and clears in at a port of entry such as Marsh Harbour. You can fly to Marsh Harbour and board there, or make the crossing part of a longer or one-way charter. If the yacht travels to meet you, a delivery fee may apply, and your quote shows it.

Guests and crew

These yachts sleep 8 to 11 guests in 4 to 5 cabins, looked after by 2 to 7 crew. For a bigger party, ask us about two yachts cruising the Sea of Abaco together.

Questions about yachts in the Abacos

Can a large yacht cruise the Abacos?

Yes. Larger yachts keep to the deeper channels of the Sea of Abaco and anchor off the cays, and guests go ashore by tender, which is easy in the calm water inside the cays. Marsh Harbour has marina berths for large yachts, while small harbours with shallow entrances, such as Hope Town, are usually visited by tender.

Is a catamaran a good choice for the Abacos?

Often, yes. A catamaran draws little water, so she can anchor close to the beaches and reach more of the shallow bays, and she sits level at anchor. The catamarans we list for the Bahamas are Wave 60 and COLETTE 64.

How does a yacht from Nassau or Florida get to the Abacos?

From Nassau the yacht crosses the Northeast Providence Channel to the Abacos; from South Florida she crosses the Gulf Stream and clears customs at a port of entry such as Marsh Harbour. The captain picks a settled day for either passage. You can join once the yacht has arrived, or come along for the crossing on a longer or one-way charter; any delivery fee is shown in your quote.

How many guests can a yacht take in the Abacos?

The yachts we list for the Bahamas sleep 8 to 11 guests in 4 to 5 cabins. For a larger group, ask us about two yachts cruising together.
