Nipper’s Beach Bar & Grill

Hurricane Dorian closed Nipper’s in 2019, and the bar has since been rebuilt; its website now welcomes visitors to “the NEW Nipper’s”. Alongside the decks and the two pools there is Overso, an air-conditioned indoor restaurant, and a gift shop selling Nipper’s T-shirts and hats. New stairs lead down to the beach, which is good for snorkelling and long walks. The owners, Johnny and Jennesse, say the bar’s reputation rests on its party atmosphere, its food and its strong drinks.

The drink to try is Nipper Juice, a frozen cocktail that the bar itself warns is a lot stronger than it tastes. The kitchen keeps to a short menu of burgers, chicken and grouper, with the grouper fried or grilled and served as a burger or as a platter with fries, plus a garden salad. On Fridays the special is Chicken in Da Bag. Eat on the decks or inside in Overso.

Fisher’s Bay, just north of Settlement Harbour, is the usual anchorage, and Dive Guana rents moorings in both the bay and the harbour, collecting the fee each morning. Orchid Bay Marina, on the south side of Settlement Harbour, has slips and fuel. Tenders can land at the public dock in the harbour, which the ferry also uses. From there, turn right along Front Street beside the harbour and follow the road across the narrow island to Nipper’s.

Nipper’s is open every day except Tuesday, from 11am to 7pm, and food is served from 11.30am to 6.30pm, so plan a long lunch rather than dinner. The gift shop closes at 4.30pm. For a group, call or email ahead; the bar also hosts private parties and events.
