Stara Gostilna
Stara Gostilna, the “old inn”, is one of the oldest restaurants in Piran, set among the old houses a few steps from the seafront promenade. Today it is a small, modern dining room for no more than 20 guests, and the Michelin Guide recommends it.
From fish restaurant to tasting menu
Donata Krašek has run Stara Gostilna since 1997 and turned it from a classic seafood restaurant into something more ambitious. The young chef Kristian Zule joined her in 2020, and the two now lead the kitchen and the dining room together.
The room is dark, elegant and intimate, and the whole restaurant can be booked for a private dinner or a small event.
What to order
In the evening the kitchen serves an eight-course tasting menu that works its way along the Slovenian coast, reworking Karst and Istrian flavours with the seasons and what is available. At lunchtime there is a shorter three-course menu, which is a good way to try the cooking.
The wine list runs to some 500 labels, with around 150 spirits as well, and the sommelier will guide you through Slovenian and foreign regions.
Getting there from the yacht
Most charter yachts berth at Marina Portorož, around 10 minutes from Piran by taxi. Piran’s old town is best explored on foot, and Savudrijska ulica is a couple of minutes’ walk west of Tartini Square, just behind the waterfront.
Good to know
Stara Gostilna opens from lunchtime until late on Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and for lunch only on Sunday. It is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. Booking is essential, and with so few seats it fills quickly in summer.
