Caffè al Teatro

Caffè al Teatro, long known as Café Teater, sits beside the Tartini Theatre on Piran’s waterfront, with a large terrace over the Bay of Piran. It runs from morning coffee through to evening drinks.

A café with a past

The café stands between the theatre and the Hotel Piran. Its interior uses paintings based on the work of Josef Maria Auchentaller, the Austrian Secession painter who often stayed in Piran in the years when the café was first opened.

Inside is a bright room with large windows, which is useful on a windy day. Outside, the terrace is framed by greenery and faces straight out to sea.

What to order

Come for breakfast, granola or a sandwich in the morning, and a coffee with one of the freshly made desserts later in the day. In the evening the menu turns to cocktails, gin and tonic and champagne, which suit the sunset over the bay.

On a hot afternoon, a cold drink on the terrace is a pleasant pause between a walk around Tartini Square and the ride back to the marina.

Getting there from the yacht

From Marina Portorož it is around 10 minutes by taxi to Piran. Stjenkova ulica is on the waterfront at the edge of Tartini Square, so the café is easy to reach on foot from anywhere in the old town.

Good to know

The café is open every day from the morning until late evening. In summer it hosts music evenings on Fridays and Saturdays, from July to early September, with lounge sets, acoustic acts and DJs. The café is also a popular meeting place during Piran’s yearly jazz festival, and it can be hired for private events.
