Franco’s Bar
For a drink before dinner in Positano, Franco’s Bar is the address. The open-air terrace beside Le Sirenuse looks out over the town’s stacked houses to the sea and the Li Galli islands, and at sunset there is hardly a better seat on the coast.
A terrace above Positano
The bar opened in 2015 in honour of Franco Sersale, who co-founded Le Sirenuse with his family in 1951. It is owned by the hotel and designed with the same care, with the view running down over the town’s houses and the tiled dome of its church to the beach: a yellow ceramic fountain by the Roman artist Giuseppe Ducrot, hand-painted blue chairs and a curtain of antique Venetian glass beads.
What to order
The cocktail list was created with the mixologist Mattia Pastori and mixes twists on classics, house drinks and alcohol-free options. Try the Franco’s Fizz, made with Amalfi lemon, almond milk and bergamot, or keep it simple with a spritz. Only drinks and small bites are served, so plan dinner elsewhere.
The classics are made well too, from an Old Fashioned to a French 75, and the alcohol-free list, called The Lights, is more than an afterthought. Small nibbles come with the drinks.
Getting there from the yacht
Positano has no marina: tenders land at the main pier on the Spiaggia Grande. The bar is only about 200 metres above the beach, but the lanes are steep, so allow ten minutes or more for the climb.
Good to know
Franco’s Bar is open every evening from April to October, weather permitting. There are no reservations, so arrive early for a seat at the front.
