Kalamies Restaurant

Kalamies is a family seafood restaurant on the sand at Pernera, on the north side of Protaras. It opened in 1976, and its terrace looks over a small bay to the blue-and-white chapel of Ayios Nikolaos on the cliff.

Three generations on the beach

The restaurant has stayed in the same spot through three generations of the family. In 2016, the year it turned 40, it won the Best Fish category at the Time Out Eating Awards, and owner and chef Maria Zachariadou Moustaka created much of today’s menu. By day the onshore breeze cools the terrace; by night the tables are lit by candles and the lights of the fishing boats show on the horizon.

What to order

Start with fresh mussels, scallops sautéed in butter and lemon, tuna tartare or salmon carpaccio, then fresh fish or seafood from the grill. The halloumi doughnuts with honey are a house speciality. There are salads, pasta, Cypriot dishes and grills for anyone not eating fish, with vegetarian and vegan choices. Finish with künefe, made Istanbul-style, and a cocktail or a glass of wine from the bar.

Getting there from the yacht

Kalamies is on the beach at Pernera, about 3 km north of Fig Tree Bay. From Ayia Napa Marina it is about 20 to 25 minutes by taxi. If the yacht is anchored off Protaras, ask the crew about landing by tender on a nearby beach; otherwise take a taxi from the nearest landing.

Good to know

The restaurant is open every day from 9am to 11pm. Book by phone, or call the mobile number, for a table by the sea at sunset in summer.
