Varadero 60

Varadero 60 is a private restaurant on the corner of Calle 60 and Tercera Avenida, a few blocks from the beach in the eastern part of Varadero town. The rooms recall the 1960s, and the kitchen cooks over charcoal.

A family restaurant with a theme

The brothers Luis Ernesto and René Morales own the restaurant and are usually there in person. Their idea was to recreate the feel of the 1960s, from the furnishings to the music, and to pair it with careful Cuban cooking.

A band plays live during dinner. The team includes a head sommelier who looks after both the wine and the cocktails, and the chef, Andy Berra, runs the kitchen.

What to order

The house dish is a whole fish, slowly grilled over charcoal so it keeps its juices and takes on a smoky flavour. Start with the octopus carpaccio, thin slices marinated in a citrus dressing, which the kitchen serves as a starter or a main course.

Meat also comes from the charcoal grill, and the bar mixes Cuban cocktails and pairs wines with the food. Ask the sommelier for a suggestion.

Getting there from the yacht

From Marina Gaviota, at the tip of the Hicacos Peninsula, the taxi ride is about 20 minutes. From Marina Chapelín it is around 15 minutes along the Autopista Sur and into town.

Good to know

Varadero 60 opens for dinner from Tuesday to Sunday, from 5.30pm to 10.30pm, and is closed on Mondays. Book through the website, by phone or on WhatsApp on the same number, especially for a large group or a table near the band.
