Santy Pescador

Santy Pescador is a fish restaurant beside the river in Jaimanitas, a seaside neighbourhood on the western edge of Havana. It is only a few minutes from Marina Hemingway, which makes it an easy choice for a first or last night ashore.

A fish restaurant in Jaimanitas

The restaurant describes its kitchen as specialised in fish and shellfish, and it cooks in Mediterranean and Japanese styles as well as Cuban. It sits on a quiet residential street between Calle 3ra C and the river, a long way from the crowds of Old Havana.

Anthony Bourdain ate here when he filmed the Cuba episode of Parts Unknown, choosing the day’s catch with classic seafood and sushi. The visit brought it a following among foreign visitors.

What to order

Start with the ceviche, which the kitchen holds up as a showcase for its fresh fish, then share a plate of sushi for the table. Garlic prawns (camarones al ajillo) are a regular on its own pages.

For a main course, ask what has come in that day and have it simply cooked. The day’s catch is what Bourdain chose, so leave room for it rather than filling up on starters.

Getting there from the yacht

Marina Hemingway, where most visiting yachts berth in Havana, is about a kilometre to the west. A taxi from the marina takes around five minutes. From Old Havana, the ride along the coast takes 30 to 40 minutes, so it is easier to come here on a night when the yacht is in the marina.

Good to know

Santy Pescador opens every day from noon to midnight, according to its own posts. Book by phone or by email to its reservations address, especially for a group or for dinner at the weekend. Its old website no longer loads, so use the phone number to confirm a table.
