Palacio de Valle

Palacio de Valle is a turreted villa on Punta Gorda, the narrow point that runs into the Bay of Cienfuegos. Its roof terrace is a popular place for a drink at sunset, and Marina Cienfuegos is a few minutes’ walk away.

A merchant’s Moorish palace

The Italian architect Alfredo Colli built the villa between 1913 and 1917. The first owner, the merchant Celestino Caces, sold it to Acisclo del Valle Blanco, who was born in Asturias and saw it completed. Its arcades, turrets and decorated rooms recall Moorish architecture, and in 2000 it was declared a National Monument.

Today the palace houses a seafood restaurant and historical displays in its rooms, with a bar on the roof. It is one of the sights of Cienfuegos, so many visitors come in the afternoon to look around.

What to order

Climb to the roof terrace for a mojito or another rum cocktail, with views over the bay and the turrets around you. Recent visitors report a small entry charge for the house that includes a cocktail, which you can take on the terrace or inside.

If you want to eat, seafood is the speciality of the restaurant downstairs; check when you arrive that it is serving.

Getting there from the yacht

Marina Cienfuegos sits on the same point, about 400 metres to the north. Walk south along Calle 37, the main street of Punta Gorda, for about five minutes.

Good to know

Opening hours are not published officially, and the house has recently closed at around 8pm, so plan an afternoon visit and an early sunset drink. Ask at the marina office for the current times before you set off.
