Bar· Stromboli, Aeolian Islands

Ritrovo Ingrid

Ritrovo Ingrid is the meeting place of Stromboli, on the church square high above the harbour. Come for a granita with a view of the sea before an evening boat trip to watch the volcano, or for a drink after it.

Named after Ingrid Bergman

The bar takes its name from Ingrid Bergman, who lived on the island in 1949 while filming Roberto Rossellini’s Stromboli. It has been an island institution for more than 35 years, run by the Cincotta family, and is a bar, pastry shop, gelateria and pizzeria in one.

Its terrace looks over the sea to Strombolicchio, the rock and lighthouse off the island’s north-east coast.

It makes a natural meeting point before an evening boat trip to see the Sciara del Fuoco, the slope where glowing volcanic material rolls into the sea. Your captain can take the yacht round after dark, and Ingrid is the place to gather beforehand or celebrate afterwards.

What to order

Granita at any hour: almond, black mulberry, white fig, peach or coffee with cream, eaten with a brioche for breakfast. Later in the day there are cannoli and pastries, pizza and seafood, and a long cocktail list in the evening.

Getting there from the yacht

Tenders, ferries and hydrofoils land at the jetty at Scari. The bar is about 400 metres above it on Piazza San Vincenzo, opposite the church, up steep lanes with no cars.

Good to know

In high summer it is open every day from breakfast until late at night; as a seasonal island business, check opening times outside the summer months. The piazza is also where walks towards the volcano begin; the upper slopes can only be visited with licensed guides.
