Café Bohemia

Café Bohemia has shaded tables on the cobbles of Plaza Vieja, one of the old squares of Havana, and more in the courtyard of the house behind. It is a pleasant stop for coffee or a cocktail while exploring the old town.

A tribute to a magazine editor

The café is the restaurant of Estancia Bohemia, a small hotel in a house dating from 1780. It was created as a tribute to Ricardo Sáenz, a former director of the Cuban magazine Bohemia and the father of the owner, Diana, and it is run as a cultural salon as well as a café.

Through an 18th-century archway, the inner courtyard is quieter than the busy square, and the restored house keeps its frescoes, patio and colonial structure.

What to order

Mornings start with Italian espresso made from Cuban coffee, with fresh pastries. Later in the day the kitchen mixes Cuban cooking with Italian dishes: house-made pasta, pizzas and vegetarian choices.

In the evening, order one of the house cocktails while a group plays traditional Cuban music. The café describes itself as a bistro where local food meets international taste.

Getting there from the yacht

From Marina Hemingway, allow 30 to 40 minutes by taxi to Old Havana and ask for Plaza Vieja. The café is on Calle San Ignacio, on the square itself. From Plaza de la Catedral it is a walk of about ten minutes south through the old streets.

Good to know

The café serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, with drinks and light meals through the day. For a courtyard table at dinner or a private meal, message ahead on WhatsApp or by email. Hotel guests also take breakfast here.
