Even though initially launched 12 months ago, AZZAM remained in the shipyard until last month. It is now officially the largest yacht cruising the worlds oceans…
Azzam left the Lürssen facilities in Bremen for her maiden voyage at the end of November 2014.
Seeing her at last in voyage it’s for the team at Nauta Design was a proud and very emotional moment. As all the others of the team involved in the design and construction, Nauta Deisgn have been waiting for this day for almost one year, since her delivery on October 22nd 2013.
The Milan-based office led by Mario Pedol commented on this achievement:
‘’We all made a huge effort to comply with an incredibly short, thus very challenging, design and production schedule which Lurssen actually succeeded in achieving even one month head of time. Knowing now that the Owner is finally starting to enjoy what we have created is definitely a happy moment.
Azzam design and build process was like a Ph. D. course in the megayacht world! We are now ready and confident in facing any kind of challenge in that field in a very mature way: the wake of Azzam, in terms of new projects, is already there and we are enjoying our confidence in dealing with it.’’
Lürssen shipyard about Azzam
The principal designer and the man who defined the original creative idea based on his in-depth knowledge of the environment was Eng. Mubarak Saad al Ahbabi. He personally assembled a world-class team, which he personally directed in all areas of the development of the Azzam project. Under his leadership the original concept of the yacht was developed starting with the overall requirements with regards to general layout, size and performance and exterior style.
Mr Al Ahbabi brief was to build a large luxury yacht with an innovative and timeless design that would be able to travel at high speed in warm and shallow waters, whilst providing luxurious and sophisticated accommodation to its guests.
Under the personal guidance of Eng. Mubarak Saad al Ahbabi, the technical engineering was developed by Lürssen, the exterior design by Nauta Yachts and the interior design by Christophe Leoni to create what is, without doubt, the most complex and challenging yacht which has ever been built.
The yacht AZZAM has broken new grounds in terms of dimension, performance and technology. On top of becoming the largest yacht in the world with a length of 180 meters, with a top speed of over 30 knots she is also one of the fastest giga yachts too. Finally, in terms of building time, she added another ground breaking record. Lürssen Managing Partner, Peter Lürssen proudly said: "When she will be delivered later this year, she will have been in build for only three years following one year of engineering." "She truly represents another milestone in not only our history but yachting history as well", he added.
The overall design of super yacht Azzam has strength of character and sense of purpose, yet it maintains a timeless elegance, incorporating all the elements of visionary contemporary modern design. Nauta CEO Mario Pedol stated: "When I first saw the scale model before the general presentation to the Principal, I was 100 % happy with the outcome and so was the Principal. Such recognition made me confident that we had achieved our goal".
Under the direction of Eng. Mubarak Saad al Ahbabi the best solutions were found in order to satisfy the specific requirements with regards to design and technology and thereby creating a yacht that meets all the expectations. The end result is a truly sophisticated Super Mega Yacht.
Amongst many other features the yacht has a main salon with a length of 29 m and a beam of 18m with an open plan and no pillars. She will travel in excess of 30 knots, powered by a combination of 2 gas turbines and 2 diesel engines with a total of 94000 horse powers.
The interior decoration was undertaken by the renowned French designer Christophe Leoni who is proud to have been able to realise a sophisticated and luxurious interior in a turn of the century Empire style. In one of his first statements, Mr Leoni said: "Though Yachting is not my main area of business, I thoroughly enjoyed the cooperation with Nauta and Lürssen and am confident that the final yacht is everything and more the owner expects." he said.
